‘Deadlocked’ by Charlaine Harris: F (45%) – Aggregate Book Review

I was frustrated with this addition to what, in the beginning, was an endearing series.

I felt as if some characters were brought back into the story for no logical reason other than to say goodbye.

As a crime novel, Deadlocked doesn’t hit the spot like previous installments.

Bottom line, it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon if you’re already invested in the series. But if you haven’t picked up one of the books by this point, I recommend watching HBO’s True Blood instead.

This book did have me guessing, but some of the plot wasn’t strung as perfectly as previous books. I could live with that.

The plot of this book may seem disappointing to so many because it is a set up book.

Sookie fans should push through the first part of Deadlocked to get to the real story, the good stuff, in the 2nd half

The book starts off rather slow, and that is another unfortunate side effect of a long series.

I liked the story and think fans of the series will enjoy it too.

Even if all we’re reading about is Sookie’s day to day I would look forward to each moment I spend with her.

Honestly, I don’t think Deadlocked‘s ultimate shortcomings can really be laid at Harris’ feet. I think she’s doing the best she can with something that maybe should’ve ended a couple of books ago.

Overall, the plot was slow, lacking and no real story development. Not once did I have that, “Oh, this s**t is about to get good” feeling.

If you’re a fan of the series, and you keep in mind that Harris is doing clean-up and setting the stage for the grand finale, you’ll appreciate it more than if you’re hoping for a sex romp or some of the humor of earlier books.

A series cannot last forever. Sometimes the story arc is done and the series has to be ended. This can be done without disappointing readers and gutting the soul out of the books. Really it can.
