Creative and appropriately disgusting descriptions are overshadowed by lack of character development, ridiculous lines, and an abrupt and unsatisfying ending. Better than recent Palahniuk, but far from his best work.

As much of a social satire as a zombie story, some critics expressed hope at a more engaging narrative and sympathetic protagonist, but overall it is an excellent book for what it is – an odd hybrid of genre and literary fiction.
