‘Once Once Upon a Secret’ by Mimi Alford: D (58%) – Aggregate Book Review
Below Average: 58%
An interesting book for the first half, but most of the reviewers said the second half dragged on, and it didn’t feel right to some that Alford felt blameless in 18-month affair with President Kennedy.
‘Ed King’ by David Guterson: F (39%) – Aggregate Book Review
Avoid: 39%
A modern retelling of ‘Oedipus Rex’ that doesn’t really work. The characters are unrelatable and unbelievable, the story is tedious, and the book doesn’t add anything to the original. On the plus side, parts of it are reportedly very funny.
’11/22/63′ by Stephen King: B+ (85%) – Aggregate Book Review
Above Average: 85%
Despite a sometimes slow pace and a necessary suspension of disbelief, King manages to craft descriptive, engaging narrative and manages a deft handling of the early 60s in this historical fiction.
‘Nightwoods’ by Charles Frazier: D (59%) – Aggregate Book Review
Not Recommended: 59%
Beautifully descriptive scenes of Appalachia in the 1960s and a well-crafted narrative are weighed down by melodrama and characters lacking nuance.
